For Christmas I got a gift card to Best Buy. Since then, I’ve been trying to figure out what to use it for. Until Friday. I went to Best Buy after work to browse around and pass the time before I met Hil to go to dinner and a movie (another post). I hadn’t seen anything in the Sunday ads that I really wanted, but the plastic gift card was burning a chemical hole in my wallet.
After not finding anything in my range worth buying on the bargain tables and open box specials, I decided to trip down the DVD TV series aisle to take a mandatory price check on the X-Files seasons. I’ve wanted (and still want) the entire X-Files series for awhile now, but they’re cost prohibitive to the tune of $90+ a season, which means about $700-800 for the whole set (not including tax).
Much to my surprise, I found that X-Files Season 1 had been marked down from $96 to $40.99. Holy crap – that’s like 40% off! Immediately I checked to see what was wrong with it, but I couldn’t find anything. The wrapping was all in place, and all the discs appeared to be there. No dents in the box; no “As Is” stickers. The only thing I could figure is that it was the last one and they just wanted to get rid of it.
Unfortunately, the only other seasons they had were 6 through 9, but they were all original price ($96). So, I continued to meander down the aisle awhile. I was pretty stoked at finding the X-Files Season 1 that I really wasn’t thinking about what else to get. There are quite a few other TV series I’d like – Scrubs, The Family Guy, some others – but I wanted to find something that would make a really special purchase.
And then I stumbled onto Firefly (I must’ve been descending the alphabet). I had heard about the series before, particularly in reference to the movie Serenity that just came out last year. It had been canceled halfway (presumably – how can one really know what the full length would’ve been) through its first season because of stupid executive decisions by Fox. Anyway, I’d been jonesing to see some episodes of it, and after my excellent find, I decided to go out on a limb and just buy it.
And thus concludes my story.
