Lesson of the Gray Blonde-Tailed Squirrel

Zip, zag and dash — the intrigant
stops and sniffs as though
the air has changed, and looks at me
with large gray eyes to match
his fur. We seem to understand
something of a relationship man and man
cannot have. The blonde-tailed squirrel
discourses on uniqueness and shows me
the worth of having just one thing
nobody else has. The speech lasts seconds,
extemporaneous and sudden, then like
a silver shaft with golden feathers,
the lecturer darts away to gather food while
I think about what I am and others are not.
