While Nature Sleeps

The firelight reminded me of universe
expanding even while we lay nearby
but not close enough to feel the heat
of it. Then there was a cricket

song pierced from the darkness into
our little circle like a silver-tipped arrow.
Someone moved on the other side
where the firelight did not reach,

but we pretty much ignore him or
whoever it was. I never cheated before,
except that once when I was too young
anyway. That was an older girl

and then the universe didn’t expand
like it is now in the firelight.
